Knowledge of emotions helps the nurse in two ways. First of all, it helps the nurse to understand her own emotions.
ADVERTISEMENTS:
Self- understanding helps the nurse to control them and to express her emotions in socially acceptable ways.
Some of the emotions may affect maintenance of her routine duties. The nurse may have to face dangerous consequences if she is unable to control her emotions. At times the patients, relatives of patients, the superior officers, and the subordinate officials may make her to become highly emotional.
Under such circumstances the knowledge of emotions and their consequences will help her to control them. This is called emotional intelligence.
The second way is the understanding of emotions of the patients. Many times due to ignorance about the disease and treatment, patients may be experiencing high emotional tension. Here, the nurse can help the patient by pacifying their tensions.
